Brett Hundley’s poor game causes questions about Packers future
GREEN BAY-It is probably a mistake to judge Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Hundley on just one National Football League start, but it is not a miscalculation to say rookie Aaron Jones is the team’s best hope for salvaging something out of an Aaron Rodgers-less second half of the season. But Brees, his two early interceptions notwithstanding, played the superior game.
The Saints took over from there, and the Packers couldn’t keep up through the air. Before Rodgers’ injury at Minnesota on October 14, none of his three top wideouts -Nelson (19 receptions, 230 yards, six touchdowns), Adams (23-285-4) or Cobb (23-218-1) – was on pace for a 1,000-yard season as Rodgers spread the ball around, but at least they were all involved.
Besides Brees’ two picks, the Saints’ rough first quarter also included a punt fumbled by Ted Ginn Jr.at his 20.
Hundley, meanwhile, had a miserable starting debut. The only way we’ll find out is if McCarthy really does remove the reins. I felt like it was very balanced with the pass. “You stay even keel and you weather the storm and you just stay with that belief that no matter what happens, throughout the game, that you are going to get this done”. Time of possession was great. Despite the turnovers, the Saints managed over thirty five minutes in time of possession.
The victory was the Saints’ fourth in a row.
Now, they return to Poydras St. for back-to-back home games against the Bears and Buccaneers.
Naturally, Hundley doesn’t think the Packers’ postseason hopes are shot.
Mark Ingram II rushed for 105 yards.
The defense gave up a long touchdown run on the first series to the Green Bay Packers.
One third of the Packers drives were three-and-outs (three of nine).
“You don’t know if it’s run or pass”, Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix said. Once he gets through that line of defenders, he can make a lot of guys miss.
The Saints have some talented players on defense, but nobody is going to confuse them with the Legion of Boom. Over the previous three games, New Orleans ranked No. 1 in opponent passer rating. His best year, somewhat unfortunately, was his rookie year: 121 tackles, for an average of 7.6 per game.
Davante Adams had two catches for 15 yards in the Packers’ Week 7 loss to the Saints.
“It’s good anytime you can get some rest for your body and just some time to sit back and reflect on how the season is going”, Packers wide receiver Geronimo Allison said. “The defensive backs didn’t bite too much”, Jones said. “We just have to make sure we’re doing what we need to do to get our playmakers involved”. It goes hand in hand.
Going forward, the Packers need to trust Hundley far more than they did on Sunday.
While the Saints are surging, the Packers limp into their bye with a two-game losing streak. “Get it to the guys who have 1-on-1s and let them beat their guy and get them the ball”. ESPN reported earlier Sunday that Rodgers, after undergoing surgery, might be able to resume throwing in six weeks, leaving open the possibility that he could play again late in the season.
McCarthy was in a damned if I do, damned if I don’t situation. Coach Mike McCarthy bristled at the suggestion that the Packers might consider signing Colin Kaepernick and spoke about the time he had invested in Hundley, a fifth-round draft choice in 2015 out of UCLA. “So I did a poor job coaching”.
