How to fix the iOS 11.1 autocorrect ‘I’ bug

If you have an iPhone and haven’t updated your hardware to iOS 11.1, these current user stories may make you wait on doing that. The bandaid lets users replace a capital “I” with a lowercase “i” – which will look odd, but not as odd as the weird exclamation point-question mark combo.

For a temporary fix before the next iOS update, users can go to the Settings menu, tap General, then Keyboard, and finally tap Text Replacement. Is this an existential test?

Maybe even: “I hate this”.

Apple is releasing hundreds of new ones with the iOS 11.1 update for iPhones and iPads.

When attempting to use “I” as a word, some users are seeing it replaced with an “A”, along with a unicode question mark character in the prediction field.

“Tyrese Gibson, who is known for his lengthy Instagram captions, was forced to use “!” every time he wanted to use “I” in his last post to the gram.

Others took a more pragmatic approach, coming up with clever methods to bypass the problem. The company doesn’t say what’s causing the issue, likely because it isn’t sure itself yet. It appears the glitch is an autocorrect problem, as, on some phones, the glitch appears briefly before the phone autocorrects lowercase “i” s into uppercase ones. Type “I” into the “Phrase” box, and type “i” into the “Shortcut” box.
