OnePlus 5T First Impression : Same soul, but a new face altogether
The OnePlus 5T marks the introduction of a 6-inch “Full Optic AMOLED Display” with an 18:9 aspect ratio to deliver a more immersive viewing experience. The smartphone comes with some noticeable incremental updates over OnePlus 5 and it bears the same price tag of Rs 32,999 for the 6GB RAM variant and Rs 37,999 for the 8GB RAM variant.
The design and display are two main points of difference between these two phones.
OnePlus on Thursday eventually ended its teasers and unveiled the awaited OnePlus 5T as its next flagship. They thought they had already satisfied the community with the OnePlus One and had to move onto the more mainstream audience with their second device – which as we all know proved to be a mistake. The screen size has been increased by reducing top and bottom bezels. Apart from this, the phone also features a fingerprint sensor as an alternate. That means the screen size is now 6-inches, but the overall phone’s body isn’t much bigger than the 5.5-inch OnePlus 5. There’s no microSD for memory expansion, but OnePlus has retained the 3.5mm headphone jack. Although the camera resolution on both phones is the same and it still comes with a dual 20+16 MP camera but the company has reworked the camera system by making the secondary camera a dedicated low-light shooter. The new OnePlus 5T will soon replace the older OnePlus 5 in markets. While the iPhone X has plethora of sensors, the OnePlus 5T does not, which is why there are limitations for facial unlocking. The list includes Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8, Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8 series and the Google Pixel 2 series, which were all introduced after OnePlus 5. You’ll no longer enjoy the zoom effects like the 5, rather, the camera has now been optimized for low-light conditions thanks to an aperture of f/1.7.
As far as durability goes, there’s no water-resistance on both the OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 5T.
Similar to its approach to hardware, OnePlus’ approach to software is centered around an experience that is refined, efficient and minimalistic. Now if you have a OnePlus 3 or a 3T, and don’t want to wait for the next iteration, then the OnePlus 5T will make a great smartphone purchase for you. Whatever the fast charging technology they use (Dash charging), having these little fancy things will help any smartphone to get the flagship status. The phone comes with flagship specs and features, a premium design and is priced affordably. It has an aperture of f/1.7 and merges four pixels into one to capture better low-light photos. That’s also when the OnePlus 5 will get it too, so you’re not getting any advantages here with the OnePlus 5T. You will find the speaker grills on the bottom of both smartphones. Also OnePlus 5 was the number one selling smartphone in the segment, according to IDC and has almost 25 per cent market share.
Additional software improvements have also been added to Portrait Mode to improve noise reduction.
Meanwhile, the OnePlus 5 is also available at Rs. 32999 for the 6GB/64GB model and Rs. 37999 for the 8GB/128GB storage model. Android 7.1 Nougat come out of the box here, with OnePlus’ OxygenOS, while Android 8.0 Oreo will land on the phone early next year, said the company.
