Black Friday is Alive and Well at the Millcreek Mall

While spectators may believe the long lines are hampering family togetherness, participants strongly disagree.

Marketing Director, Molly Mitchell, says they keep the deals to Black Friday in order to let families and employees spend time together on Thanksgiving. Kids say Santa never misses a year.

This year, the group was decked out in light-up Christmas ornament necklaces, headbands and earrings. “We do matching shirts and wait for the newspaper ads”. Her bright red sweater also featured a penguin – reflecting, perhaps, more of a seasonal than holiday theme.

“I’m not sure I like the extra holiday havoc”, she said. We bought TVs at Walmart last night. $40 off a train table, for her 2-year-old son, at Toys R Us. “We came (to St. Joseph), looked at the ads, hit the stores and crashed by 10 p.m”. “But I love the Black Friday aspect of it”.

Hundreds of shoppers were out in droves early Friday morning around St. Joseph.

Several people told 980 CFPL they took the day off work while others said they called in sick at the last minute to take advantage of some sales. The line grew throughout the morning, eventually forming down the side of the sidewalk. “You also get five off thirty or ten off sixty”, he says.

But each year more and more shoppers head online begging the question, is Black Friday going under? They wanted to enjoy their Thanksgiving with family and each other instead of shopping Thursday.
