Team GB’s Peaty wins World 100m gold
ADAM Peaty produced a stunning comeback to take 100m breaststroke gold at the World Swimming Championships in Russian Federation.
The 20-year-old from Uttoxeter won in 58.52sec in a neck and neck race with the Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh to repeat the feat achieved by David Wilkie in Cali in 1975. But Peaty overtook van der Burgh in the closing meter, getting his hand on the wall in 58.52 for the gold.
Van der Burgh finished just 0.07 seconds behind, with Britain’s Ross Murdoch taking third in 59.09.
Peaty won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and four gold medals in the 2014 European Championships in Berlin, including in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.
“I turned and I saw his foot and I was like, “Right, I’ve got some catching up to do now” Peaty said.
Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden lowered her own world record in the 100-meter butterfly to win gold Monday night, after first breaking the mark set by American Dana Vollmer at the 2012 London Olympics in the semifinals on Sunday.
The South African sent a clear message he was in sizzling form with his time in the semi-final only 0.03 off his personal best and the previous world record.
Their tussle for fast times should make for an exciting final on Monday where Van der Burgh will be looking to claim the title that had eluded him so far.
It’s been almost a year since Great Britain’s Adam Peaty broke the world record in the 50 breaststroke, but the record has yet to be ratified by FINA due to an administrative error involving blood testing.
