Things to Know Before ACA Open Enrollment Ends
“What happens is when you call the marketplace, there’s a tier 1 representative who gets on the phone”.
The fate of the health law remains unclear under the Trump administration, but insurers and navigators say that people should count on having coverage next year. That’s up slightly from the number of people who got subsidies in 2017. “We’re trying hard not to mix messages”. It was supposed to end Friday, but federal authorities granted Florida an extension due to the busy hurricane season. “The driver is what their healthcare needs are”.
Obamacare supporters were giddy when open enrollment began on November 1.
Complaining that the enrollment period has been shorten is a flimsy excuse for low enrollment numbers. And so employees will find that a portion of what they pay in monthly premiums, or what they require their employees to contribute to a monthly premium, is also based on making up for the shortfalls from the other payers or from the uninsured population.
“Using these folks that do this all day long, every day, will really help these people be able to get this coverage”, Nancy Anness, chief advocacy officer for Saint Thomas Health, said.
With agents “very active engaging with new and returning members” and the company’s retail centers available to enrollees, “total sales traffic is up more than 20 percent over a year ago”.
Observations about the enrollment process made by local organizations hold statewide, said Tia Whitaker, statewide director for outreach and enrollment at the Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers.
Insurers such as Independence Blue Cross, which is the only company to offer individual market plans on the exchange in Southeastern Pennsylvania, can also arrange for income-qualified subsidies for their plans.
The deadline for this year’s open enrollment period is Friday. Of that 500,000, about 236,000 were members who did not actively shop for a new plan and were automatically re-enrolled. So for Americans shopping on healthcare.gov or in state marketplaces, they are open for business, but it’s a shorter enrollment this year.
“People who buy their own coverage on the individual market and who have incomes above 400 percent of the federal poverty level (about $48,200 for an individual and $98,400 for a family of four) – the threshold for ACA premium subsidies – would face the brunt of the premium increase”, it said.
Two Senate Democrats have asked CMS and HHS to make a last-minute extension of the open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA)’s insurance exchanges, arguing the December 15 deadline will leave too many interested customers either without health coverage or automatically enrolled into plans which “may no longer be the best choice for their families”. This year, “they might not notice that the last minute has passed”.
