Heavy rain possible on Christmas Day

The first full day of winter on Friday was a cloudy but mostly dry one, except for a few areas of patchy drizzle. Cloudy. Fog. Lows upper 50s and low 60s.

There is a decent chance for rain Saturday night into Sunday morning out ahead of a cold front that will finally bring cooler temperatures into the region. Rain showers expected Friday. The focus of the rain will slowly shift to the southeast Friday evening and night. This will be our only chance of a white Christmas!

Low-pressure conditions are likely to dominate from around Christmas Eve onwards which means spells of heavy rain and strong winds between Christmas and New Year. Temperatures will fall to the lower 30s which will allow for the precipitation to transition to a mix then snow showers early Saturday morning.

Mother nature is giving the gift of much cooler temperatures for Christmas this year. Highs top out in the low 30s before dropping into the low 20s under partly cloudy skies overnight. It is expected to be very cold overnight, with frost and ice. Heavy rain won’t be a big concern with this front, with most areas only looking at up to a quarter-of-an-inch across the Piedmont and near or just over a half-an-inch across the mountains.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be below average with lots of sunshine.

The latest forecast for the capital on Christmas day is temperatures of 10 degrees celsius, with some rain and breezy conditions. Showers are plentiful all day, with the showers finally drying out and clearing gradually during the latter part of the evening. Expect temperatures in the lower to middle 30s.
