Arctic air moving in this weekend

A Cold Start to the New Year: The blast of arctic air that comes in Sunday won’t just be a quick hit. Much colder air is expected for the weekend. Any accumulation will again be very minor, with the best chance for a glaze of ice or perhaps a half-inch of snow looking to come across far eastern and southeastern Oklahoma.

Frigid weather is expected to reach the Big Apple just in time to chill those visiting Times Square, though the record low of minus 4 F from 1918 will not be challenged.

Once this Arctic front pushes through, we will have much colder temperatures.

Friday: Clouds, with a light mist are likely through the morning, though the rain threat is diminishing. This will give way to wind chill readings Saturday morning near 0 degrees for many spots.

Even in the South, temperatures are expected to be 20 degrees below average in cities such as Nashville, Tennessee, and Little Rock, Arkansas, according to AccuWeather. The first part of next week is going to be downright cold with potentially a hard freeze overnight Monday and Tuesday with temperatures bottoming out in the 20s across the area. I think we will see more issues with wintry precip before the pattern changes. If you’re going out New Year’s Day, dress appropriately as the National Weather Service expects a high in the upper 20s, possibly the lower 30s.

On Sunday, temperatures probably won’t get above the zero mark.

Our recent cold snap may not make on a top ten or top five list, but it does look to continue into the new year. Most places will be below freezing by Sunday evening.

Overnight into Monday, it’s possible the Highland Lakes could experience light, freezing rain, so be cautious if you’re traveling. Wind: SE 10 miles per hour shifitng to the N.

We will see a slow warming trend to close out next week as highs return to the middle 40s by Friday with lows back to only the middle 20s by Friday morning. A low-end chance of rain is possible on Tuesday (20%).

This is some risky, pipe-bursting type cold for the holiday weekend, so please be properly prepared!
