Tennessee Titans hold on to earn first postseason berth since 2008
If the Jaguars defeat Tennessee, the Titans would need the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Chargers to lose on Sunday to make the postseason field.
This was supposed to be the year when long suffering Titans’ fans finally got a victor back. However, the Jaguars have something on the line, even if no playoff implications are in play.
The Tennessee Titans are 7-2 straight up and 4-4-1 against the spread in their last nine home games against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The offense never got into a sustainable rhythm and the defense, which took steps forward, never looked confident in its ability to repeat the flashes of brilliance. He got away from defensive end Calais Campbell and then stiff-armed strong safety Barry Church to gain extra yardage as the clock wound down to the two-minute warning.
Jacksonville did get the ball back one last time, but with only 18 seconds remaining and the ball in their own red zone there weren’t many options available for a quick score.
If the Jaguars play their key contributors in the division rivalry game on Sunday, one reason that Robinson might play despite his abdominal strain would be for quarterback Blake Bortles’ protection.
Offensively, Marcus Mariota put up 275 yards through the air, but didn’t throw for a touchdown and turned it over once, while yet again DeMarco Murray and the running game struggled to do anything. It was the most important performance of Mariota’s young career, and like much of the season, it didn’t happen with eye-popping stats.
That’s the thing. No matter how bleak it may appear after these last three weeks, the Titans are still alive.
The Jaguars finished the season 10-6 after clinching their first AFC South title last week. Hurns is expected to play against the Titans. Westbrook is likely to play the same role against the Titans. Ryan Succop cashed in with a 25-yard field goal. Fellow rookie receiver Keelan Cole also made a crucial mistake, fumbling on a crossing route deep in Jacksonville territory. The Jaguars (10-5) are locked in as the No. 3 seed and already know they’ll host a wild-card game in a week.
The reception made Henry the only player in the National Football League with three touchdowns of at least 65 yards from scrimmage in the 2017 season.
The Jaguars’ only touchdown came courtesy of their defense.
The Titans went three-and-out and the Jaguars suddenly had a chance to take the lead. Steve McNair rushed for two touchdowns and Derrick Mason returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown as the Titans earned their first Super Bowl berth with a 33-14 win. Three plays later, Mariota converted the aforementioned third-and-6 with a 13-yard scramble.
