Trump Pushes Compromise On Immigration
Dick Durbin of IL, the No.2 Democrat in the Senate, has criticized the request made by the administration for wall and border security spending.
“And remember this, its just common sense, thet are not sending us their finest, OK”, Trump said.
Here’s what immigration reformers are up against.
Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., leader of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus, said in a text message after the White House meeting he was “generally” opposed to a two-step process “because history would indicate the second step never happens”. That is, Trump needs Democrats to support this measure.
Yet Democrats and Republicans are still far apart on border security and other immigration provisions that would be needed to clinch a deal on the matter. “I think it can be bipartisan”.
“Of course they had other problems, but maybe all of you should start thinking about going back to a form of earmarks”, he said.
Democrats have been pushing for what Sen.
“I don’t think they’re closer”, said Republican Senator John Kennedy, who was not at the talks.
“You can put the most attractive wall out there and it’s not going to stop them”, Cuellar remarked.
“I don’t need to go to that kind of a meeting”, Pelosi said. Two independents up for re-election caucus with Democrats.
Their reasons to accept a DACA deal vary.
“I was encouraged by the tone”, the New York Democrat said. “The Dreamers are in all the meetings”. Such “Dreamers” are the top priority for Democrats such as Schumer. We have to get rid of chain migration.
“We want to make sure that we have interior and border enforcement”, he said.
Trump has long made that case, saying even during his campaign that his border wall didn’t need to be continuous, thanks to natural barriers in the landscape. “It must end the visa lottery”, Mr Trump said. Democrats say they see room to negotiate on a deal that’s primarily border security infrastructure, combined with a pathway to legal status for DACA recipients.
“Rip off the Band-Aid and give them a green card”, said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, one of the groups that usually mobilizes against any effort to grant what they call “amnesty” for anyone who entered the country illegally.
“In September, you’ve got Trump saying, ‘Border security for the DREAM Act, a wall can wait until later, ‘” Sharry said.
“What he agreed to is, it’s not a 2,000-mile wall itself, but he very certainly said there has to be a wall as a part of it”, Lankford said. House Majority Leaders Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., then added quickly that Republicans want security included. In essence, there is no reason for Dems to hold the budget hostage when there is time left for a separate deal on DACA – something that the president has wanted all along.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. suggested an “easy way out” of the stalemate.
‘If you don’t have the wall, you don’t have security, ‘ Trump told the lawmakers.
“I don’t know how much the market will bear”. Former Justice Department officials said the gang-on-gang violence case likely wouldn’t have been authorized for capital punishment under Obama, who oversaw just two death-penalty gang cases while in office.
