Friday winter storm fast approaching!
Subzero temperatures are possible Wednesday morning.
“Projected accumulations of 1-2” of sleet and snow will fall with locally higher amounts closer to the TN River. Some areas southeast will still be seeing a wintry mix.
Freezing rain may persist in a narrow band from parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, central and upstate NY to northern New England.
By midday, precipitation in Indy will be falling as snow. The switch will then happen from northwest to southeast through the rest of Friday evening, Friday night and Saturday morning.
“We determined that the risk of injury or property damage was too great to continue our operations, so we made a decision to get our fleet off the icy streets while public works crews deal with the situation”, Al Blease, regional vice president for WCA, said in a release.
“We pretreat, that way if it hits the road, it can help, because our trucks have trouble in ice, just like other vehicles”, LeBrun said. A WINTER STORM WARNING is in effect until noon for some counties in northern and southern Montana, and some places along the Rocky Mountain front.
Precipitation is expected to be done by 5 a.m. with the sun out by 9 a.m. or 10 a.m.
“Less snow would mean more ice accumulation, which could range from a trace to a glaze of 0.25” or more.
The roads aren’t the only areas that people need to be concerned. The cold front moved through Kentuckiana a little earlier than expected with temperatures crashing before dawn along the I-65 corridor. Northwest wind around 15 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 20 miles per hour. This past week, Montanans saw some big changes with regards to the weather.
An average winter only features 100.9 inches, but Erie blew past that before the end of December thanks to an epic lake-effect event that dumped 65.1 inches of snow from Christmas Eve through the morning of Dec. 27.
“The big concern is what is already on the ground and what could possibly freeze during that commute”, Gilbert said.
The system is expected to exit the region Friday night. Wind chills will drop to about zero degrees by Friday morning.
The weather service urges caution while shoveling.

Meanwhile, WCA recalled its trucks and suspended trash collections in the Kansas City area because of icy streets. Even with the colder air arriving earlier and temperatures around freezing, it will take awhile for road surfaces to cool down given the recent warmth.
