Donald Trump blasts court for protecting DACA ‘Dreamers’
Trump made the comment during a discussion of US visa and immigration policies inside the Oval Office. DACA, the Obama-era program, has protected approximately 800,000 unauthorized young immigrants from deportation.
According to The Washington Post, U.S. District Judge William Alsup blocked the Trump administration’s plan to phase out DACA protections in a January 9 ruling, meaning the safeguards against deportation for the nearly 690,000 people protected by the program must stay in place as a legal challenge to ending DACA moves forward.
“It’s an affirmation of the principle that no one is above the law”, he told the Washington Post. The ruling strikes the Trump administration March deadline for Congress to come up with new legislation.
Trump has denied making the remarks, but Illinois Democratic Sen.
In September, President Trump ordered the program come to an end but a federal judge temporarily halted that decision Tuesday night lifting the fear of deportation for now.
“I feel more optimistic than I have since I’ve been here for three years (in Congress) that we’re going to get a healthy compromise on immigration”, said Republican Representative Carlos Curbelo, who has offered legislative proposals to help Dreamers. You want to avoid getting the deal too comprehensive, because then there’s too much to oppose.
“As a nation, we have a moral and humanitarian obligation to ‘Dreamers, ‘” Bishop Vasquez said. “I think we have a long way to go”, he told reporters.
On Wednesday, the White House also released a corrected transcript with Trump’s answer: “I would like to do that”.
Republican Senator David Perdue, who was at the same White House meeting and had said he did not recall whether Trump made the comment, was more explicit Sunday.
U.S District Judge William Alsup of the Northern District of California ruled Tuesday that the program must continue and those already approved for DACA protections and work permits must be allowed to renew them before they expire.
The meeting comes after a federal judge this week issued an injunction halting Trump’s plans to end DACA, providing the immigrants with temporary relief.
The bill includes protections for so-called “Dreamers” but the president has said he will only sign a bill if it includes a border wall. “It also increases boots on the ground”, limits immigrants from bringing family members into the country in the future, and ends the green card lottery system, he added.
The agreement among senators came as more than 100 corporate CEOs urged Congress to “act immediately and pass a permanent bipartisan legislative solution to enable Dreamers who are now living, working, and contributing to our communities to continue doing so”.
Trump has produced a steady stream of mixed messages on DACA, beginning with his campaign promise to “immediately” terminate the program.
