Nintendo reveals Labo, a DIY ‘build-and-play experience’ for Switch
The only information we have about the upcoming reveal is that it’s a “new interactive experience” for the Nintendo Switch, the company’s newest console. Essentially, the Labo is a number of different paper craft kits you can purchase and then fold to create all manner of wondrous cardboard toys, like pianos or fishing rods or cars! The Japanese company was granted multiple patents related to motion tracking in 2015 and 2016.
Indie nostalgia-fest Saturday Morning RPG is coming to the Nintendo Switch.
Regardless, this left fans highly curious about the incoming “interactive experience”. Nintendo France MD Philippe Lavoue also spoke of the need for Nintendo to keep doing things differently to its competitors, so it may be that the announcement will be something that we haven’t seen before.
Also, later today Nintendo will be revealing a “New Way to Play”.
After a bunch of failed venture investments including a taxi company and even love hotels according to Kotaku, Nintendo started investing in toys in the 1960s.
Nintendo Labo will be released 27 April in Europe, 20 April in the US.
Nintendo has described Nintendo Labo, a collection of cardboard DIY add-ons to the switch, as something that “combines the magic of Nintendo Switch with the fun of DIY creations”. The Variety Kit will be available at a suggested retail price of $69.99, and the Robot Kit will be available at a suggested retail price of $79.99.
With this new Switch accessory, Nintendo is making efforts to attract more people to buy a Switch as the console enters its second year on the market. You’ll use touchscreen controls on the Switch to drive it around.
The motorbike has a rotating, function throttle; while the RC vehicle is driven around by the movement from the HD Rumble motors. After constructing the rod, which even includes a rotating wheel, players insert the Joy-Con into the fishing pole’s reel.
The Switch already features several different ways to play, not only with its console and portable modes, but with its multi-functional “Joy-Con” controllers and touch screen.
Interested in branching off into cardboard toys with Nintendo? These kits will include instructions on how to assemble the cardboard in such a way that allows you to design a controller for the included software.
Nintendo UK will hold Nintendo Labo Workshop events in South Kensington, London next month, between Wednesday 14th – Saturday 17th February 2018.
