Borussia Dortmund director slams Wenger over Aubameyang
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has revealed that Arsenal are close to sealing the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund this month.
Swedish teenager, Alexander Isak, 18, made only his third German league appearance when he took Aubameyang’s place on Sunday, but the team struggled to take their chances.
“There has been a lot of speculation about the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Malcom coming in – but Arsenal should be aiming higher”, he told the Metro.
Certainly, Arsenal were keen on the Armenian before he ended up at Old Trafford but owing to his recent struggles under Jose Mourinho, it was, perhaps, understandable for Wenger to question whether Mkhitaryan would experience something similar at the Emirates.
“Auba must now make it clear to the coach if he is ready or not to give it all for Dortmund”. At the moment I can not tell you much more. We have the feeling that he can stay there.
“We saw glimpses this season, but I didn’t think he would be in Jose’s starting XI”. As long as he’s a Dortmund player, I’ll be counting on him. “Overall, if it happens now it is because somebody else comes in for him”. Today I was completely separate from all of that. Neither the Gabonese striker or the Frenchman appear to be comfortable in any other position than upfront. I’m not going to speak about hypothetical situations, he is an Arsenal player and he can be an Arsenal player.
Wenger remains a long-term admirer of former Borussia Dortmund star Mkhitaryan and tried to sign him before he joined Manchester United in the summer of 2016.
A deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan plus a cash payment could be completed as soon as Friday.
Aubameyang has not travelled with the Dortmund squad for their league game tonight against Hertha Berlin and he has been tipped to leave the club in the current transfer window.
With the Sanchez and Mkhitaryan moves close, most Bookmakers have closed their markets on those deals happening – but Aubameyang odds have been cut further after Wenger’s statement.
However, it is understood that Dortmund are open to selling Aubameyang this month if they can seal a replacement first.
