Matt Kenseth stretches his fuel and steals a win at Pocono
Austin Dillon, Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch are all entered in the race.
One by one, fuel woes cost the contenders.
Just when the wackiness subsided Sunday, it took off in another direction in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway.
Then, Busch took the white flag.
And over the final 37 circuits, it was Matt Kenseth who used his fuel conversation skills for the win.
Busch and Joey Logano were trying to conserve fuel late in the race in an effort capture the win.
Busch’s season debut mirrored his recent finishes in the Sprint Cup Series, where he has won three straight races and four of five. I wish I would have known the 22 (Logano) was that far away from making it; I would saved some more….
A win would have completed Busch’s near-miraculous revival from serious injuries suffered at Daytona global Speedway in February to the sealing of a Chase for the Sprint Cup bid.
“With 20 to go, I knew we were a little short, so Matt started saving”, said crew chief Jason Ratcliff. “But that’s the position we’re in”.
“The script I had played out in my head was we were going to be 15”, he said. “But right when I did come back, I felt ready to go”.
Brad Keselowski placed second, followed by Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
It was the second victory of the season for Kenseth and his first ever at Pocono. “Never in my life did I think I’d win a fuel mileage race”.
The first half of the race was full of yellow flags, including crashes and blown engines, so it was a bit surprising the end of the race was so caution-free. It also launched some pit crew helmets into the air, but no one was hurt.
Pit road proved a unsafe place. His tire changer and tire carrier both jumped on the hood and the team jackman was clipped by the left side of No. 2 Ford. The Camping World Truck Series has only raced at Pocono Raceway since 2010, with one race per year. He was credited with a 20th-place finish, the last vehicle on the lead lap and the victim of another close call. Trevor Bayne was knocked out of the race when a pipe went through his radiator. The caution was the first of the day.
“What we’re really doing is integrating the businesses”, Kauffman said. As a little bonus with the expanded roster, I’ll give an honorable mention pick in each salary class. It’s my gift to you. It couldn’t have been any better. “I think I was probably the most shocked person on the race track when I found that out”. He remains in contention for a spot in the final championship chase although he has not won a race this year. “I knew our fastest lap needed to be the last time on the race track, so I knew that we had done a good job”. Wilson ended up finishing second, 3.4 seconds behind. Dixon, who set a lap record to start from the pole, came home fourth behind Simon Pagenaud.
Logano, who led a race-high 97 laps but wound up 20th, was disconsolate afterward. The track’s all-time wins leader (6) is retiring at the end of the season. It looked like he would win another Sunday when Logano slowed to a crawl well before the finish.
It was a missed opportunity for everyone but Rahal. He cycled back into fifth-place over the next seven circuits and remained safely in the top five for the closing stages. “He came back a lot sooner and has been on a tear”. You can push your vehicle to the limit.
