Trump’s America: Government reopens as fate of “dreamers” hangs in the balance
The recommencement of government is taking place after the Senate Democrats conceded their demands for a vote on legislation to protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival, or DACA, recipients, compromising on their previous stipulations. It took extreme measures to get us to this point.
Congress will provide back pay to all of the furloughed workers.
President Trump has signed a stopgap spending bill passed by Congress on Monday, ending the partial shutdown of the federal government after three days.
The impasse was broken after Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell said his party meant to consider legislation “that would address DACA, border security and related issues, as well as disaster relief”.
McConnell’s remarks amounted to a historic promise, at least according to Democratic leader Sen.
“Senate Democrats wasted the entire country’s time with the pointless Schumer Shutdown, jeopardizing national security and delaying an extension of health insurance for 8.9 million children, while gaining absolutely nothing in return, other than a headache and bad press”, the NRSC said in a press release, referring to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.).
U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) says, ” Four months into the fiscal year, Republicans, who control the White House and both houses of Congress, finally understand that we can not govern from continuing resolution to continuing resolution.
“I understand people are anxious he broke his word to a few of his members but it is something different to make a promise on the floor of the Senate to dozens of members rather than to one or two”, Murphy added.
Reporters asked Flake on Monday how he felt about McConnell promising to do something in February that he’d already promised to do in January.
“We’re going to vote to reopen the government”, Sen. And I also agree with him that we do need to strengthen our border security. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Sen.
“It is becoming abundantly clear that Republican Leadership does not have – nor has ever had – any intention of allowing DREAMers a pathway to citizenship”, he said in a statement.
Schumer also acted knowing a bipartisan group of 20 to 25 Senators had been meeting in the offices of Senator Susan Collins, during the shutdown debacle, who are all committed to resolve the DACA issue.
There have been four government shutdowns since 1990.
“Now there is a real pathway to get a bill on the floor and through the Senate”, Schumer said of legislation to halt any deportation efforts aimed at the younger immigrants.
Senate rules impose a threshold of 60 votes to break a filibuster, and Senate Republicans now hold a slim majority of 51 votes, meaning even if they can unite their members, they need nine more votes to end debate.
“Of course, the real losers are the immigrants”, Becker chimed in, reminding listeners of the estimated almost 800,000 Dreamers at risk of being stripped of their legal rights.
