James Franco Controversy: A Closer Look After Oscars 2018 Snub
Right after James Franco won a Golden Globe Award for his performance in “The Disaster Artist”, allegations came out on social media, and then in more detailed news reports, about things he’d reportedly done in the past.
According to Deadline.com, they chose to take a stand against the actor after he stepped up to accept his Golden Globe Award while wearing a Time’s Up pin on his lapel. But allegations of sexual misconduct emerged following Franco’s win for best actor at the Golden Globes in January. Immediately after his name was announced, multiple women including Ally Sheedy complained on Twitter using the #MeToo hashtag. Paley acknowledged that her story was complicated by the fact that her relationship with Franco continued after the coercive incident. Or did the face of the film, who has been accused of sexually exploitative behavior, tank its Oscars glory?
The actor responded to the accusations on an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “I do it whenever I know that there’s something wrong or needs to be changed”. I will make it. Sarah as a filmmaker and violet as a comedy writer and hope by coming forward they can become part of Hollywood being safer for women to work in their early 20s and I hope they have long careers.
“I think it would have been on people’s minds as they were ticking off their ballot boxes and perhaps, female voters especially might have felt it was inappropriate to reward him [Franco] this year”, he told Reuters. “I think it’s a good thing and I support it”.
Franco won at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards but skipped the ceremony after the allegations emerged.
The men competing for the award include Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name), Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.), and Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour).
However, a lot of people online are very angry that James Franco didn’t get a much expected nomination. It lets the conversation about workplace harassment and parity go on without litigating the specifics of Franco’s case.
Still, Tither-Kaplan said she sees a path to redemption for the actor, who briefly stepped out of the limelight after a handful of women spoke out against him.
Tither-Kaplan explained that she was a student in Franco’s Los Angeles master class on sex scenes where she says he created an “exploitative environment” for non-celebrities by favoring those who were more open to nudity and sex scenes and limiting opportunities for those that weren’t. Perhaps unexpectedly, the actor was snubbed by the Academy in Tuesday morning’s nominations.
The 90th annual Academy Awards will take place on March 4 hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
