The heads of unions and auto manufacturing condemned the idea and predicted Canadian-made cars would soon be full of foreign-made parts.
The TPP talks come as Canada faces a tough renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
At least half of the nations involved in the TPP had said they would instead consider Chinese-led multilateral trade deals such as the RCEP. Vietnam’s communist government gave in on major labor reforms for access to USA markets.
China is not part of the TPP and is trying to get up a rival deal with seven TPP countries, including Australia, and eight others.
