Olympics: Tokyo’s Olympic stadium costs ‘through the roof’ – IOC president
Los Angeles was the only city to bid for the 1984 Games at a time when the Olympics were torn by boycotts and financial problems. “I guess it will be profitable (for the 2022 host city), because of the high contribution by the IOC of $800 million plus for the organizing committee (as a Games preparation fund)”, said Bach.
Ten IOC members resigned or were expelled, and the IOC adopted a series of reforms to clean up the organization.
Bach in his speech at the opening of the 128th IOC Session at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, noted that the elements of the Olympic Agenda 2020 had already been taken into account by the candidate cities.
“We have this commitment and we are sure that USOC will deliver on this commitment, and that we will have on September 15 a bid from the United States”.
The District vied with Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston for the USOC’s Olympic bid, which went to Boston in January.
“For us the situation has not changed”, Bach said.
Tony Winnicker, who has worked with the office of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee on Olympics efforts, acknowledged that the city might also be open to the possibility.
As well as tomorrow’s vote between Brasov and Lausanne to decide the host nation of the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics, Bach also highlighted the new Olympic TV Channel as a “gamechanger” which will realise this ambition.
Bach says it’s an “internal issue” for the USOC to determine the most appropriate city after Boston dropped out of the running.
In the short span of time since the Boston Olympic bid was pulled, a stream of crticisim has flowed back and forth between the City of Boston’s leader and the Olympic organizations that he was partners with only days ago. Political missteps and hamhanded campaigning marred the last two U.S. bids – New York and Chicago each finished an embarrassing fourth for the 2012 and 2016 Games, respectively.
But Walsh got there first, blowing up the bid using the same arguments as those made for months by the critics he dismissed, even on Monday, as “10 people on Twitter”.
But it has been no secret that Los Angeles would be ready and willing to mount a bid on short notice. “I extended my honest apologies that we had to change the plan”, Mori told reporters.
“It’s not necessary”, he said. Like L.A., Paris can argue that is has many venues available and local organizers are pushing the story of the Olympics returning there for the first time in 100 years.
The entire process will stretch over two years of preparations and meetings before the IOC will choose an official host city in summer 2017. It fundamentally came down to: “there was not support for the Olympics by enough people for the USOC to feel comfortable”, she said.
