Five Injured in Shooting at a US School are in Critical Condition
“We rushed to the high school, and they wouldn’t let us get through”, she said.
At this time past year, there had been five reported school shootings, according to a tally compiled by Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun-control advocacy group.
The first Kentucky high school shooting victims arrived by air ambulance at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
“I don’t know how to start healing myself, and I don’t know how the students will be able to heal because they will have to be in that school every day”, said Ms Alexandra Smith, a former student at the school.
‘Whatever that kid had going through his mind, I don’t know, ‘ she said. I didn’t think much of it. “But we didn’t know what it was, and then by the second and third, everybody just took off running”.
“At some level what you end up dealing with are the repercussions emotionally more so than the physical injury patterns”, Guillamondegui said. He pulled it out and he just did it. “I ran as fast as I could”. “Something happened to him that made him want to do that”. Of those, 16 suffered gunshot wounds.
Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rick Sanders identified the students killed in the incident as Nicole Holt and Preston Ryan Cope. Marshall County prosecutor Jeffrey Edwards said the shooting appeared to be random without targeting individual victims, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported. Fourteen were male and six female.
The shooting scene was chaotic and quiet, a witness told the Associated Press.
Bailey’s mom said that if the suspected shooter needed a friend, her daughter could have been one for him. “Just see what they’re involved in if they are hurting before any of this happens again”.
Bailey’s father Jason remembers dropping his daughter off at school the morning she was shot.
He kept firing, she said, until he ran out of ammunition and took off running, trying to get away. “He still took my baby from me”. A grand jury will begin considering the evidence in February.
Darnall’s office originally meant to charge the suspect with 12 counts of attempted murder but they felt that there would be a better case under the assault charge, which carries the same penalty, according to USA Today. Officials initially planned to charge him with attempted murder, but determined they would have more success with assault charges.
“At that point, it becomes a public case”, Darnall said.
But the high school – still a crime scene – remained closed and Lovett had no word Wednesday on when classes there might resume.
Marshall County High School is about 30 minutes from Heath High School in Paducah, Kentucky, where a 1997 mass shooting killed three and injured five.
“Several acts of heroism”, Lovett said. “I’ll take Communion for them, light a candle for them”.
President Donald Trump tweeted about the tragedy on Tuesday.
