Americans are dreamers too: Donald Trump
The president used the maiden speech to talk about his plans for immigration, boast of economic achievements and threaten foreign adversaries.
His administration had created 2.4 million jobs, 200,000 of those in manufacturing, he added.
“We are waging a campaign of maximum pressure to prevent that from happening”, he said. Donald Trump also spoke of the natural calamities that the United States has faced in 2017 and said: “To everyone still recovering in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, California, and everywhere else – we are with you, we love you, and we will pull through together”.
Trump emphasized that America will not support its “adversaries”. “We just felt the need to throw it together … for people that aren’t necessarily that partisan, we thought that we would have a viewing party for them”.
Among those looking on were dozens of cross-armed Democratic lawmakers, some decked in black to honor the victims of sexual harassment and still others wearing butterfly stickers in support of immigrants – two social issues that more than any others have roiled America in the age of Trump.
Tackling the sensitive immigration debate that has roiled Washington, Trump redoubled his recent pledge to offer a path to citizenship for 1.8 million young immigrants – as part of a package that would also require increased funding for border security, including a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border, ending the nation’s visa lottery method and revamping the current legal immigration system.
Meanwhile, Nevada environmental groups say the State of the Union address was notable for not for what was said, but for what the president didn’t say.
But it was his language on immigration that obliterated the earlier hopeful tone, focusing on “drugs” and “gangs” and introducing the parents of two women killed by a Latino gang, even though immigrants perpetrate less crime, per capita, than American-born citizens.
“The White House agenda is to gut legal immigration in exchange for allowing some of the Dreamers to live here”, Democratic Representative Luis Gutierrez of IL said after Trump’s speech.
By pointing to a welder in the rust belt or a North Korean defector, Trump could revel in the success of the tax reform bill and take a strong stance against the rogue state.
Trump vowed to keep the Guantanamo Bay prison open – anathema to Democrats and many Republicans. The future of the Dreamers led to a three-day shutdown of the US government last week. He encouraged Congress to address the Iran nuclear deal, which he famously calls a “terrible” deal.
The first lady’s decision to ride with her guests and not her husband was a gesture meant to honor the attendees “for the true heroes they are”, her office said.
Among the guests of honor in the House chamber Tuesday night was Albuquerque police officer Ryan Holets, who gained global fame a year ago after he and his wife, Rebecca, adopted a baby born to a heroin addict.
“I’m just spreading my wings a little bit”, he said.
She said, “The President has attacked our families…” Regardless of who the President was, the S&P 500 has been down more often than it has been up. “This is unjust. This is unacceptable”. Caty Weaver was the editor.
