So much for speech: Trump on hot mic says he’ll release memo
Donald Trump centered his speech, which lasted more than 80 minutes, on “the American Dream”.
“Tonight, I call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out coming ground, and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people we were elected to serve”, Trump said.
“On the issue of immigration, which is delicate and hard and often divisive, what did he do?”
The president’s framework would provide a 10-12 year path to citizenship for DACA-eligible immigrants, give preference to immigrants with skills needed in the US economy, end a “visa lottery” that gave people across the world a chance to come legally to the United States, and seek to boost border security by erecting a wall between the United States and Mexico.
“I’m wearing black to the [State of the Union] because it is time we all say #TimesUP on sexual harassment & inequality in the workplace – for all industries – from the restaurant kitchen, to Hollywood, to the halls of Congress”, tweeted Representative Carolyn Maloney.
The president also said he was “committed to fighting the drug epidemic and helping get treatment for those in need” on Tuesday night, but he offered few specifics about his plan for battling the scourge. Numerous provisions he outlined will continue the theme of renewing rural America.
A major sticking point among Republicans is how the Trump administration will deal with Dreamers. Jonathan Merker, a junior studying politics and philosophy and president of PSSA, said the event functioned more as an academic gathering than a partisan one.
Trump’s speech on Tuesday came just a week after he gleefully accused Democrats of losing their nerve during a brief government shutdown.
He spoke about potential agenda items for 2018 in broad terms, including a call for $1.5 trillion in new infrastructure spending and partnerships with states and the private sector. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) – who would carry the plan through the Senate as chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee said he wasn’t sure what’s going to be in the final plan. John Cornyn (R., Texas). The U.S. Chamber of Commerce backs an increase in the federal fuel tax – it would be the first increase in a quarter century – to help pay for infrastructure projects.
“Americans love their country”. According to Trump, those who “meet education and work requirements, and show good moral character”, will be eligible to eventually become citizens. Trump’s approval rating has careened downhill, but among his base, he’s making America great, again, preserving the traditional systems that placed native-born white Christian heterosexuality atop our demographic pyramid.
Grisham previously told the Associated Press that the first lady “does not concern herself with what others think about her fashion and always stays true to herself”.
