Trump for ‘fair, equitable, merit-based’ immigration system
Republicans appear headed into the year with the idea that 2017 was when they got bigger items done and that 2018 will be a time to deal with necessary business, including spending and immigration.
But some GOP lawmakers on Sunday interview shows said the memo has nothing to do with the ongoing Mueller investigation, which also involves whether the president and his aides sought to obstruct justice. They overwhelmingly support its public release.
It alleged that that the warrant obtained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court to monitor former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page was based on an unsubstantiated dossier of negative information on the Republican presidential candidate.
SUSAN DAVIS, BYLINE: Hey, Ari. The greatest influence nearly certainly will be the Koch brothers, the billionaire businessmen who just completed their annual fundraising confab where dozens of top campaign financiers announced plans to pool at least $400 million, dwarfing anything any individual party committee will spend.
Denying a political motive, Republican committee members defended the release of the GOP memo as appropriate.
The memo is said to allege FBI misconduct in the initial stages of its investigation of potential ties between Russian Federation and Trump’s 2016 campaign. That includes House Speaker Paul Ryan. He shared his dislike of the terms “dreamers” and “community college”, claimed that a senator told him he was a better president than George Washington or Abraham Lincoln and suggested the challenges facing felons trying to get a job will vanish in this booming economy. “Scorched-earth attacks from politicians with partisan goals now threaten that support, raising corrosive doubts about the integrity of the Federal Bureau of Investigation that could last for generations”.
Here’s a word that Republicans are going to make sure that working-class America hears a lot between now until the November elections: crumbs. This is just about congressional oversight of the executive branch and of national surveillance programs.
The top Democrat on the Republican-led House Intelligence Committee that released the memo called it “a political hit job” and questioned whether GOP Rep. Devin Nunes, the committee chairman, had coordinated with the White House in drafting it.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell promised that wouldn’t happen, saying, “There’s no education in the second kick of a mule”. “What this has become is a very absurd game of chicken”, they said in the note.
Last week, when asked if Dreamers should be concerned about being deported on March 5th if there’s no deal, Trump said: “Tell them not to be concerned”. House conservatives already rejected that out of hand.
So though Trump Republicanism has elements of other party traditions, its dominant tone is nationalist.
“The most pressing, must-do issue that we have is immigration”, he said. The next deadline, as you said.
“We want to take care of DACA, and I hope we will. We’re going to solve the problem”. They came up with some fake polls, you know that fake polls. The House is only expected to be in session until Tuesday next week. We need the support of the Democrats in order to do it, and they might not want to do it. It seems like another stopgap bill is an absolute certainty at this point.
A government shutdown is, in the simplest terms, when Congress can not agree on what is known as an appropriations bill. The details are still being worked out. Democrats said they’ll have the resources to win and noted the party’s electoral successes in down-ballot races throughout 2017.
SHAPIRO: This is also a midterm election year, and I have to imagine that’s come up.
The Republicans applauded in agreement and Trump returned to listing accomplishments, like cutting regulations and allowing oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said, “I do not believe we should be granting a path to citizenship to anybody here illegally” and described Trump’s offer as “inconsistent with the promises we made to the men and women who elected us”. To be fair, Moore was about as flawed a candidate as they could face.
According to the White House countries like Canada and Australia use a merit-based immigration system that benefits both the immigrants and those nations.
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi accused Mr Trump of “sending his friend Putin a bouquet”, calling it a “desperate attempt to distract the American people from the truth about the Trump-Russia scandal”.
