Sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, kim Yo-Jong, is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games, which are being held in South Korea Friday.
What draws attention is its Japan match, as many in both Koreas still harbor bitter resentment against Japan’s 35-year colonial rule that ended in 1945, three years before the peninsula was divided into the Soviet-backed North and the US-supported South.
Pence’s delegation includes Fred Warmbier, father of Otto, the American student who died in mysterious circumstances after going into a coma while imprisoned in North Korea.
But not before the North shocked the world on November 29, 1987, by ordering the bombing of a Seoul-bound passenger flight that had originated in Iraq with two stopovers scheduled in United Arab Emirates and Bangkok.
On Wednesday in Japan, Pence announced “the toughest and most aggressive round of economic sanctions on North Korea ever”.
“International sanctions are created to cut off resources to the North’s nuclear missile program, not to prevent it from sending a peace party to the South (during the Games)”, said Delury.
The US however, believes that the North is using the Olympics for propaganda purposes and is sending Vice-President Mike Pence to the opening ceremony to counter it. She is also considered Kim’s closest relative. “North Korea has been trying to form this all-Koreans versus the US rivalry, which the USA would feel uncomfortable with”.
Asked to evaluate the likelihood of the scenarios, Kim believes it is extremely unlikely that the North will voluntarily give up its nuclear weapons. The United Nations sanctions ban supplying or transferring luxury items to North Korea or to North Korean nationals.
“We all live in this apartment building, and it feels so surreal that I feel like being inside a video game”, Lee said after her practice at Gangneung Ice Arena on Wednesday.
Kim Jong-Nam, the leader’s half brother, was assassinated past year by apparent North Korean agents at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia.
Details of the parade are usually kept secret for security reasons because Kim Jong Un and his top generals are expected to attend.
Kim Yo Jong and Kim Jong Un were born to the same mother, Ko Yong Hui.
The 30-year-old, who has seen her profile rise steadily since 2014, was last year promoted to North Korea’s Politburo.
The White House hopes that sanctions will slow the development of the country’s missile program, and strangle the economy to the point where North Korea would put its nuclear weapons on the negotiating table.
South Korea wants to use the event to re-engage with North Korea and open the way for talks to resolve one of the world’s most unsafe crises, in which U.S. President Donald Trump and Pyongyang have swapped nuclear threats. Analysts are cautioning against overexpectations, even as the North sends athletes, artists, and supporters to the South to participate in events related to the Olympics.
He also warned that the North & South Korea had previously “marched under the same banner” at past Olympics “only to see North Korea continue its pursuit of threats and provocations”.
“We cannot expect any meaningful dialogue with North Korea as long as they do not show genuine willingness and concrete action for the de-nuclearization”, Abe said. Seoul exempted the ferry from sanctions to allow it in South Korean waters.
Pence announced the revised guidelines earlier Wednesday while speaking alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, adding the United States and its allies were prepared to ratchet up the pressure against the Hermit Kingdom until Kim’s regime completely “abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile programs”.
