North Korea invites South president to Pyongyang

Turns out it wasn’t a secret plan for the newly unified Korean women’s hockey team to beat Switzerland. He then recalled his past visit to the North’s Diamond Mountain resort, where he and his mother met his North Korean aunt during a temporary reunion of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

Though South Korea is hosting the Winter Olympic Games for the first time, the nation has some experience in the world of global athletics, having hosted the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has invited South Korea’s president Moon Jae-in to a meeting in Pyongyang.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister and North Korea’s nominal head of state were both seated behind Pence in the VIP box.

Moon did not respond directly to the invitation from Kim Jong Un, and urged Pyongyang to actively seek an “absolutely necessary” dialogue with Washington, Moon’s spokesman said.

“But I haven’t been to Pyongyang”, Moon said, according to comments provided by his office. “It was out of our control”.

The two Koreas have a rocky and sometimes violent history at the Blue House. Those rumors soon dissipated. “Putting in real effort is our people’s wish”.

“We had a good game against Sweden (last week)”.

The IOC gave the Korean team license expand its roster from 23 to 35 players.

The “North Korean players are holding our players back”, said Anthony Jeon, 24, a law student. Pence carried a similar message during his trip to Japan and South Korea. “You have to tell the these players, ‘oh, you’re going to the Olympics”.

If the North Koreans were out of place on the squad, no one seemed to notice. But this fear has been unfounded.

“They laugh together, they hang out together, they eat meals together”. I’ll walk into the locker room and they’re all laughing together. The few South Koreans left in the arena could make out some of the words, but the songs were unfamiliar North Korean choruses. “They’re just girls playing hockey”.

That air of unfairness has been a sticking point among many ordinary Koreans.

First rule: in the presence of guests, do not refer to their leader, Kim Jong Un, by name, or certainly do not mention his nuclear and missile programmes.

It was part of a cross-border deal in which North Korea sent hundreds of athletes, cheerleaders and others to the Pyeongchang Winter Games in the South. The riverside facility is named after late U.S. Army commander Walton Walker, who’s considered a war hero in the South for his battles against the North during the Korean War.

Its most famous alumna is Ri Sol Ju, better known these days as the First Lady of North Korea.

Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies, echoed Cha’s view that the image is unlikely to be that of Kim.

Apparently too anxious to put on a show before the packed house of 6,000, Korea had a jittery start to the game and never recovered.

The team was a political construct and for some South Korean fans, the loss underscored the reasons against joining forces with North Korea.

From the moment the combined team was announced, however, it exposed deep divisions in South Korean society.

“It’s very sad to see”, says Joo, 22. Many were outraged at perceived unfairness to homegrown players. “And I didn’t want that”.

The sister of the North Korean leader has arrived in South Korea, dressed in a black coat and absorbing a barrage of camera flashes.

But a first-period treble from Alina Muller set the tone and effectively dashed any hopes of a homemade fairytale.

Playing together on an Olympic stage is a much different challenge, and this team came together only on January 25.

Twenty-four hours later, they were on the ice while some of the most powerful leaders in each of their countries watched.
