Bjoergen becomes most successful winter Olympian with 14 medals
Scheduled for Thursday, the event includes two races, the downhill and slalom – the same disciplines in which these two talented American skiers have previously won gold medals.
Lindsey Vonn Wins Bronze In Downhill At Pyeongyang Winter Olympics The U.S. skiing star won a bronze medal in what was likely the last Olympic downhill of her career.
Michelle Gisin of Switzerland won the gold and Wendy Holdener of Switzerland earned the bronze.
“I still don’t realize I’m first”, Goggia said.
And another medal for the Gisin household.
Vonn, one of the greatest downhill skiers of all time, knew she was going to need it, suggesting after that portion that “maybe I can pull out a miracle”.
“The best ever. It makes everything more lovely”, Michelle Gisin said.
Later in the day, a group of elderly South Korean men gave her family some gifts and a letter of thanks to mark her grandfather’s service during the 1950-53 Korean War.
I’m not talking about the best-at-the-time version that pales and becomes one dimensional when viewed through history. “But I really hope it only takes one more season because it would be hard for me to continue on after that”. “It means a lot to me that she enjoys racing with me as much as I enjoy racing with her, I respect her very much, especially because of all the injuries she’s had as well”, Vonn said.
“To have two medals at the Olympics – that’s insane”, Shiffrin said.
“It’s fantastic to be on the podium with two such unbelievable skiers and I knew I will have to show the slalom of my life to have a chance to get that medal and to get that gold medal”, the 24-year-old Gisin added.
She is 33, the oldest woman to ever win an Alpine medal at a Winter Games.
But it begs the question, too: How can someone who has mastered a task, someone who makes better slalom turns than anyone in the world, struggle with confidence before a slalom? To be on the podium with a friend and teammate? “You don’t realize the amount of every single thing she’s done every day for the last eight years has been for this day and that 2 minutes”, said Vonn’s sister, Karin Kildow. “I think she had potential to do a lot more at these Games, but at the same time – same like me, you can’t expect everything all the time”.
Mack finished in third place, Corning finished in fourth and Gerard just squeaked into the finals in sixth place.
Bronze medallist Lindsey Vonn of the U.S celebrates after finishing third in the women’s downhill, February 21. As she acknowledged Friday, she thought she was a contender in three: GS, slalom and super-combined.
“I wanted to win so much because of him, but I still think I made him proud”, Vonn said in an emotional post-race interview on NBC after the downhill.
At least her downhill training runs won’t be wasted.
Tonight could be the final Olympic race for Lindsey Vonn, who is set to compete against Mikaela Shiffrin for the first time in PyeongChang in the combined event at 9:30 p.m. ET.
In an exciting game that went into overtime, the Czech Republic defeated the US men’s hockey team in a penalty shot shootout, scoring twice to USA’s zero.
