Russia will consider UN ceasefire in Syria
US Ambassador to the UN Nikii Haley has said that “it’s time to take immediate action” to save civilians who are under attack from the Syrian army.
The civilian casualties and devastation there are among the worst in Syria since the government captured rebel-held parts of Aleppo in intense fighting in 2016. “Cessations can not be established by putting a word in the resolution”, he noted.
“The secretary-general is deeply alarmed by the escalating situation in Eastern Ghouta and its devastating impact on civilians”, said United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric. Haley’s statement concluded, “As the Secretary-General warned us all, Eastern Ghouta can not wait”.
It was the second straight day that the civilian death toll topped 100, after 127 were killed Monday in Eastern Ghouta’s bloodiest day in four years.
Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said the convoy of up to 50 vehicles had retreated east of Aleppo, adding: “It appears that their aim was a little bit of a show and a little bit of propaganda”.
“Our local partner has offices and centres in Damascus, and have been working to deliver vital aid to families affected by the country’s ever-escalating civil war”. “We in Ghouta have been getting hit by air strikes for more than five years and this is not new to us … but we have never seen anything like this escalation”. The situation in Afghanistan is much the same, where the wrath of the United States forces often turns on the local populace while terrorist-rebels hide in Pakistan and carry out raids.
Former U.N. secretary-general Ban Ki-moon participated in Wednesday’s council meeting, a thematic discussion of the practices and principles of the U.N. Charter. According to the agreed status of such zones in Syria, there should be ceasefire in place leading to a complete end of hostilities.
It is not yet known if Russia, Assad’s biggest backer, will block the vote Thursday. He added he was “leaning towards a vote” on Friday after the Council had examined Russia’s proposed amendments.
“We condemn all acts of violence that target civilians and civilian facilities and hurt innocent lives”, Ma said at the council briefing on Syria. Nebenzia concluded by asking aloud who was the aggressor? “Not people. We don’t fight our own people”.
