Joss Whedon won’t direct ‘Batgirl’: “I didn’t have a story”
Almost a year after signing on with Warner Bros. to write and possibly direct DC’s Batgirl for the studio, Joss Whedon has thrown in the towel and walked away from the project.
“Batgirl is a project that is so addictive, and Warner and DC to me are so supported in our collaboration, that it took me several months to realize that I really did not have a story for this film”.
That said, it’s the year 2018, and after learning on Thursday that Whedon would no longer be making “Batgirl”, it’s hard not to be glad that he’s gone. President Toby Emmerich were understanding of that decision. The director has given the laughably rubbish excuse that he simply couldn’t think up a story for a movie, despite a sassy teenage girl Batman being pretty much the ideal Joss Whedon project.
Though he seems like a good fit on paper, we were slightly uneasy when Whedon was hired for this project, and it seems like the cultural landscape has shifted seismically since then. DC Entertainments’ highly anticipated Batgirl movie as well as Flashpoint, would likely enter active development once director Patty Jenkins’ begins shooting Wonder Woman 2 later this year.
Thanking the entire universe for not allowing the sexist & bad Joss Whedon Wonder Woman to ever get made.
Joss Whedon is worshipped among many genre nerds for shows like Buffy, Angel and Firefly. However, if Wonder Woman is DC’s only successful franchise, the studio appears as a one-trick pony. Which, in of itself, is a rather large hint as to what Warner Bros.is thinking for a new direction on Batgirl.
Warner Bros. has also been developing a “Gotham City Sirens” project with Margot Robbie starring as her Harley Quinn character from “Suicide Squad” and David Ayer directing.
Meanwhile, sources said Whedon tried to figure out how to do Batgirl, but eventually failed in doing so. Yes, Marvel might be breaking box-office records every film release, but they need to concede Marvel just does it better and rather find their own unique way to tell their own stories instead.
