Suarez Hat-trick, Messi Brace Lead Barca To Big Win Over Girona
Lionel Messi dazzled on his way to another career record as Luis Suarez hit a hat-trick in Barcelona‘s 6-1 demolition of Girona. In truth, he had not, but he did improve in the second half and ended up bagging an assist himself with a fine run and cross as Suarez completed his hat-trick.
Barcelona are back in action in La Liga on Saturday after securing a hard-fought draw away to Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Ernesto Valverde’s side, who remain unbeaten in the league, began this weekend seven points clear of Atletico and could put even more distance themselves and second place. A swift counter-attack saw Messi in possession in the final third, he slipped in Coutinho on the left side of the penalty area and the Brazilian’s first-time ball inside was swept home by Suarez. With the Girona defenders packed in front of him, there appeared to be no way for the Argentinian to play the ball forward, but Messi found space to slide the ball forward for Suarez to shoot home a low finish.
The home side responded instantly – Messi rolling a typically ideal throughball for Suarez to slot home. He got in behind and lobbed a shot over Bono, but Bernardo was back to make the clearing header off the line. Girona dropped their last La Liga match with a 1-0 loss to Sevilla.
In minute 36, Messi picked up his second of the match and extended Barcelona’s lead with a direct free-kick from roughly 20 yards out.
44′ GOAL! Barcelona 4-1 Girona: Barcelona are surely out of sight now!
Messi and Coutinho dazzled with world-class goals, both which required flawless execution.
Girona is the only side among the current La Liga teams that Lionel Messi has not scored against. He can bring the ball out wide or through the middle and he can play with his back to goal…he has managed to become a valuable player in the dressing room and he is playing really well. The fifth goal eventually arrived on 65 minutes and was worth the wait.
