Trump Backs Raising Age For Buying Assault Rifles, Bucks NRA
The president commented as he opened a school safety discussion at the White House with state and local officials from around the country. One of the participants suggested having people in the school – teachers, administrators, who have volunteered to have a firearm safely locked in the classroom, and are given training throughout the year. Previously, Florida was considered one of the safest places.
“Starting with cameras, making sure that every school in the districts have cameras, external cameras and monitors to see who is coming toward the building…making sure that there are metal detectors”, said Defillo. “If you harden the sites you’re not going to have this problem”.
The NEA said more guns in schools is not the solution.
According to tolerance.org, “Black children constitute 18 percent of students, but they account for 46 of those suspended a few times”.
“If you had a teacher who knew how to handle a firearm, this attack could result in a far less deplorable”, – said the President.
Parker said there are several issues to consider when implementing a policy allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons. Instead of arming teachers with more gun, supply us with materials & resources we desperately need.
Trump conceded that his proposal to arm teachers was controversial, but emphasized that teachers would be well-trained.
Educators around the US are protesting proposals to arm teachers by posting with a hashtag, #ArmMeWith, to ask for more school counselors, books, snacks for hungry students and other things they say schools need rather than guns.
“I disagree with arming teachers”. A lot these schools, especially public ones, have troubled youth who need patience and an ear, not a teacher who wants to play hero.
Many teachers, however, are fighting back against this idea.
“But I told them, we’re going to have to toughen them up because it doesn’t make anybody look good”, Trump said of regulations that could prevent shootings.
“Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks!”
The president also warned about children’s exposure to violence in video games, movies and the Internet.
Trump said it is “very, very important” to have offensive capability, as well as a defensive capability that’s within the schools.
Trump held the listening session at the White House Wednesday after Gunman Nikolas Cruz, 19, killed 14 students and three school workers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school last Wednesday.
