US police officer fatally shot during Memphis traffic stop
MEMPHIS (USA TODAY)-A manhunt is under way Sunday after a police officer was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Tennessee.
The gunman and another man who was in the driver’s seat of the auto then fled on foot, and a citizen who found Bolton shot a short time later called for help on the officer’s radio, as indicated by police.
“They were beating down the doors, ” resident Aaron Calvin said, adding that he and other residents were told to leave their apartments because officers were looking for a suspect in a police shooting.
He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but died of his injuries.
“It doesn’t get any easier”, Armstrong said during a press conference.
“This speaks volumes about the inherent danger of police work in general”, he said.
Former University of Cincinnati Police Officer Ray Tensing faces charges of murder and voluntary manslaughter for shooting Samuel DuBose in the headduring a traffic stop July 19.
Officer Bolton joined the force in October 2010.
Bolton, who graduated from White Station High School in 1999, served a tour in Iraq, The Commercial Appeal reported. “And this is just a reminder of how unsafe this job is”.
Earlier Sunday, police said a person of “interest” had been taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Also, Officer Martoiya Lang was killed in December 2012 while serving a warrant.
“The suspect responsible is still at large and officers are in they are attempting to locate him”, an official police statement said.
“If you look at the number that have been killed by gun violence, it’s in the tens of thousands”, Obama said during an interview with the BBC before his recent visit to Kenya. Church member Pam Haley said Bolton’s father died about a month ago.
