Vikings GM: No decisions have been made on QBs
Keenum, Bridgewater and Bradford are all options the team is considering, according to Zimmer. There has been some confusion about Bridgewater’s status because of the possibility that the league and the Vikings could contend that his limited availability last season could result in his contract being rolled over into next season. Why risk the fates’ fury by changing things now? The Jets may have the most money of all the teams out there that are in need of a quarterback.
“It happens”, Bridgewater told reporters on January 22, one day after the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Vikings in the NFC Championship game.
The Vikings aren’t tipping their hand at quarterback: As of now, Minnesota has three QBs headed to free agency – Sam Bradford, Teddy Bridgewater and Case Keenum – and there are reports the Vikings will be strong players for Kirk Cousins once free agency begins.
The Vikings have already reportedly chose to let both Case Keenum and Teddy Bridgewater become unrestricted free agents. That trade can not become official until March 14, also the day the free agent market formally opens. And Keenum, well, his future might be the most hard to predict.
But, when he’s on and at full health, Bradford has proven to be a reliable pivot.
Zimmer has no problem with either of the three QBs being the starter, and has placed a lot of confidence in his guys.
First and most obviously, let’s just say that any reasonable football fan would have the Vikings still in the mix for next year’s title. They thought Bridgewater was their guy after he led Minnesota to the playoffs as a sophomore. They’re all great people.
Many in the league believe the Vikings are going to pursue Kirk Cousins in free agency.
Five months from the day he tore his left ACL in the fourth quarter of the Minnesota Vikings’ Week 4 loss against Detroit, Dalvin Cook continues to make significant strides in his rehabilitation.
“The one thing I told Rick was, ‘We’ve had a good team, that’s why we’ve won 40 games”, since the 2014 season, Zimmer said.
Hey, the Vikings are an attractive free agent destination. On Thursday, Zimmer was asked about the decision, specifically answering a question about if Keenum’s sample size from 2017 was too small to truly evaluate. NFL Network has reported that the Vikings don’t plan to work out an extension and nor do they plan to franchise him. Bridgewater missed all of 2016 and only played a handful of snaps this season in relief of breakout star Case Keenum who led the Vikings to the NFC Championship.
Earlier this month, Pro Football Talk suggested the Jets could even go as far as guaranteeing the entire contract, an nearly unheard of option as far as long-term deals in the NFL are concerned. “We’re always going to be looking at options in all areas to make sure we’re finding the best fit for the Minnesota Vikings”.
