Trump’s choice of Pompeo could boost negotiations with NK
With the firing of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Tuesday, Defense Secretary James Mattis lost his closest ally in the tumultuous Trump Administration.
For the hopeful, the transition rids the department of a former oil executive criticized for walling himself off from career diplomats, attempting to slash the department’s budget and returning internal memos from subordinates with grades reflecting typos and other highly technical infractions. “If confirmed, Mr. Pompeo will take over the State Department just as the president is weighing whether to ditch the deal altogether-even if it outrages European allies”. “That’s a good start”.
Lu said China is “willing to work” with Trump’s nominee for the top diplomat job, Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo, in order to continue relations based on mutual respect and cooperation. The comedian said that Tillerson’s ouster and the resignation of Trump’s economic advisor Gary Cohn hopefully mark the “end of this myth that serious people can rein in Donald Trump”. Or it could be the result of Mr. Tillerson contradicting the White House’s soft line on the shocking nerve gas-attacks against Russian exiles in Britain on March 4 – attacks the British government says implicate the Putin government. “Now they may get better management but worse policy”.
The other point is that if Tillerson laughed off the request, I’m sure it infuriated Trump, because he was probably more than half serious. After Mr Tillerson refused to issue an explicit denial of “morongate”, Mr Trump suggested the two men took IQ tests-“and I can tell you who’s going to win”. He at least hasn’t been the disaster I thought he would be, though.
Meyers’ comment on Tuesday night came during a segment in which he poked fun at President Trump for removing Tillerson via Twitter earlier that day. That’s all he ever really was for Trump, just a guy to oversee the dismantling of the State Department and to be his whipping boy to undermine and publicly humiliate when he felt the need.
This was one of the key differences Trump cited in explaining Tillerson’s dismissal. For example, Mr Tillerson had urged Mr Trump not to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, or to back Saudi Arabia’s campaign against Qatar, or to move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, all of which Mr Trump has done.
However, given the significance Trump attaches to India, it would be a tough call to change the dates of the maiden India-US two plus two dialogue, they said.
The absence of USA diplomacy in the past 15 months is not a Tillerson problem as much as it is a White House problem.
“I am confident he is the right person for the job at this critical juncture”.
“The worry about it is first, just more chaos from an administration that wants to cut diplomacy funding, that won’t send us ambassadorial nominees, that sends out insane tweets, even about the leaders of our friendly nations, much less our adversaries”, said Kaine.
