Toys ‘R’ Us confirms it will close all 735 stores

While Target does not report its toy sales separately, Reuters cited a marketing executive as saying a lack of other strong toy sellers most likely helped Target keep its “loyalists” away from Toys R Us. Unfortunately, as its name implies, Toys “R” Us was perhaps a one-trick pony.
Mattel has pared its exposure to Toys R Us in recent years as the chain’s problems mounted.
Walmart is the largest toy retailer in the U.S. and the second-largest online after Amazon. And then the emergence of Amazon sped its demise. The company has filed for liquidation bankruptcy and will most likely close its remaining 735 stores. But by 1998, things had changed, and Walmart began selling more toys than Toys R Us in the U.S. – a signal of more trouble ahead.
The turnaround didn’t work.
Welsh says she’s been working with a number of companies like Glowzone, an entertainment park, and Lucky Markets, which offers beer tastings in its stores, which would be interested in taking some of the spaces nationwide.
The chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last fall. The announcement comes after the dream toy company made a decision to shut down its United Kingdom operations at the beginning of the year.

A company’s customers tend to land “pretty close to the bottom of the totem pole” in bankruptcy cases, said Brian Davidoff, a financial restructuring attorney for Greenberg Glusker.
“The stark reality” is that the company will run out of cash in the United States in May, the company noted in its filing.
Toys R Us is preparing to liquidate all of its USA stores, including several in Mid-Michigan.
Customers should also be aware that they have only 30 days to use gift cards at the stores, according to a report from USA Today.
The company’s 30,000 employees received letters overnight informing them that they will be paid for 60 days following federal regulations. If you have gift cards to the toy retail giant laying around, you might be wondering what to do with them.
“It was like going into Santa’s workshop”, said Jim Silver, a longtime New York-based toy expert.
But analysts say Toys R Us did little to reverse its fortunes. But that’s far from certain.

But the company’s biggest albatross was that it struggled with massive debt since private-equity firms Bain Capital, KKR & Co. and Vornado Realty Trust took it private in a $6.6 billion leveraged buyout in 2005.
