Irish Community Day event held in Allentown
In Hounslow, west London, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated the day with the Irish Guards, as a heavily pregnant Kate sipper sparkling water to her husband’s pint of Guinness. “I get to celebrate my day, here, while I’m still living in Canada”.
And it is not just in Ireland where Saint Patrick is being honoured.
Patrick’s Parade is no different, started in 1976 when Father Thomas Goggin and several other Irish folk from the St. Louis area chose to march around the St. Ann Church.
In 1918, the parade was officially cancelled to avoid conflicts with military conscription agents in Montreal, but a parade was held anyway in Griffintown – an Irish stronghold in Montreal at the time.
And family ties run deep all across the parade route. The groups were as diverse as they were numerous: a bagpipe band, a float with cartoon characters such as a minion and a dancing Pikachu, Miss Boston, a creature made of balloons, and many more. Governor Charlie Baker, Mayor Marty Walsh, Boston Police Commissioner William Evans and other officials led the parade, which began near Broadway Station at 1 p.m.
The city rejoiced on a day to celebrate Irish culture and tradition.
“Every year, a different city, and a different parade every year”, Wetzel said.
Varadkar, Ireland’s first openly gay leader, watched the parade at St. Patrick’s Cathedral before joining the march.
Weather for the parade is expected to be cold, in the 40s, but sunny.
More than 100 groups and thousands of marchers participated in Sunday’s event, according to organizers.
