The New York Jets are now the favorites to land Sam Darnold

The New York Jets shook up the National Football League draft on Saturday by soaring three spots to No. 3 overall in a stunning swap with the Indianapolis Colts.

There’s also a chance that the Giants could take a non-quarterback with that second overall pick, but regardless of their plans, the Jets’ trade into number three says a lot about this year’s quarterback class depth and that NY is comfortable building their future around one of the top three guys on their board.

The Jets re-signed Josh McCown, who will likely head into the offseason programs as the starting quarterback, but the 25-year-old Bridgewater could give him – and presumably whomever NY takes in the draft – a run in training camp if healthy.

The Browns will more than likely take their favorite quarterback at one, but this move by the Jets changes the landscape and certainly effects who will be available when Browns new GM John Dorsey selects again with the fourth pick in the draft. NY re-signed Josh McCown to a one-year, $10 million deal and added Bridgewater, instead.

At this point, at least three quarterbacks will go in the top 10 of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Jets are now in the position to possibly take one of the top quarterbacks in USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield or Wyoming’s Josh Allen.

In this situation, Beane may decide to play it safe and keep the two first-round picks and hope that someone may fall to that spot at #12. It’s a real possibility given that the Bills boast two picks in each of the first three rounds.

However, the Giants’ desire to move that pick could hinge on the availability of Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, considered the top talent in the draft.

The New York Jets signed free agent quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to a contract Sunday.

Now it’s the J-E-T-S who have moved directly there to get their quarterback. Keenum signed a two-year deal. Say, perhaps, the Buffalo Bills? “We feel like at (No.) 6, we’ll still be able to get a premium player”. Now it appears as if they will have limited selection, with not only the Jets moving up but the Giants taking a QB with the second pick. Mayfield also has the leadership qualities that could help to reverse the revolving door trend of quarterbacks in Cleveland. But by trading with the Jets, they nearly ensure their ability to move down and still secure a blue-chip player. It’s not likely, but it can’t be ruled out, especially if they believe one or two quarterbacks are a notch above the rest.

Considering the need for a long-term arm, New York’s decision to trade up was not a surprising one.
