Lt. Gen. HR McMaster Will Resign As National Security Adviser
“Iraq was a waste of blood and treasure”.
A second former White House official offered a blunt assessment of former Obama officials now detailed or appointed to the NSC: “Everyone who was there during Obama years should start packing their shit”.
“President Trump’s decision to meet Kim Jong-un over his advisers’ objections demonstrates that he is the driving force on policy”, said Troy Stangarone, senior director at the Korea Economic Institute of America. Instead, he’s a hard power unilateralist, seeing no problem too large for USA military power.
Bolton met with Trump and Kelly in early March to discuss North Korea and Iran.
Shortly after the announcement, CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins tweeted that Bolton promised Trump he wouldn’t start any wars.
“He is among the most hawkish of neoconservative hawks”, Mr Bennett says.
We are confident that Saddam Hussein has hidden weapons of mass destruction.
With North Korea, Bolton has a history too.
“So we have the opportunity if we played this professionally, if we prepared for a real engagement with North, of doing a deal that would enhance our security, reduce the likelihood of conflict”, Gallucci said.
Coupled with Trump’s decision last week to replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with Mike Pompeo, now the Central Intelligence Agency director, the moves suggest that the administration will shed even more of the approaches favored by the Republican foreign policy establishment in favor of confrontational policies on subjects such as Iran and North Korea.
More broadly, the appointment has fueled worries that the Trump administration is turning its back on Washington’s decades-long role as the preeminent guarantor of global stability.
He’s been equally hawkish about Iran, arguing that Barack Obama should never have entered into the agreement under which Iran promised not to go on developing nuclear warheads while focusing on nuclear power. In January, Bolton described the deal as a “strategic mistake”.
A source close to Bolton cautioned that any staffing changes would take time, given the need to process security clearances. Might he not ruin chances for a successful Moon-Kim summit and then advise Trump not to see Kim at all?
Regarding Iran, Bolton has made it clear that nothing less than aggressive military action will stop the Islamic Republic from developing nuclear weapons.
Donald Trump has repeatedly said the United States war in Iraq was a mistake. Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, resigned amid controversy over his contact with Russian officials within a month of taking the job. Remember when we used to reassure ourselves that Trump’s foreign policy wouldn’t be so bad because there were grown-ups in the room? The former U.S. envoy to the United Nations is slated to assume assigned office on April 9.
In particular, critics pointed to his 1994 statement that, “The Secretariat building in NY has 38 stories”. He once famously said that if the U.N. Secretariat building lost 10 stories, “it wouldn’t make a bit of difference”.
Top Israeli officials lauded praise on the appointment of Bolton, calling him a “stalwart friend of Israel”.
He has shown similar disdain for other multilateral institutions, including the International Criminal Court.
The American Enterprise Institute is regarded as an organization with strong neoconservative ties.
Enter Bolton. He has said that sanctions don’t work, and the time for talking to North Korea is over.
But critics on both sides of politics have slammed the appointment. The administration is now poised to see a third national security adviser enter the White House.
Bolton, during his tenure at the United Nations, was a leading voice on the need for the Security Council to take strong and meaningful action against global proliferation and terrorism.
But others did not ascribe so much influence to the incoming adviser, saying the administration is run largely by Trump alone.
