Trump, Governors Working To Send National Guard To US-Mexico Border
The president and White House did not immediately provide further details on what actions the administration will take. “Congress has repeatedly failed to pass tough immigration laws and people are flooding into our country”, said Hannity.
White House officials said Wednesday that President Donald Trump, frustrated with congressional inaction over his demands for a border wall, will direct the National Guard to be dispatched to the southern us border to help address his administration’s concerns with immigration. “We have catch and release”.
“We don’t have laws”.
THE FACTS: Wrong on several fronts. In 1989, DoD formed Joint Task Force 6, aimed at aiding border security along the Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California borders with Mexico. In another, he wrote in all caps, “ACT CONGRESS!”
But a senior administration official said on a briefing call with reporters that the memorandums of understanding are still being negotiated among the DHS, Department of Defense, National Guard Bureau and relevant governors.
Governors of the four US states bordering Mexico were largely supportive of the move.
By Tuesday, Mexican officials said that the caravan had mostly broken up.
Overall, Border Patrol arrests dropped during Obama’s tenure, despite surges in his second term.
Like many, he had joined the caravan – which was never expected to be so big, and never planned to go all the way to the border – because there was safety in numbers. He has also been under growing pressure from conservative backers who have accused him of betraying his base for not delivering on the wall, and he was set off by images played on his favorite network, Fox News, of a “caravan” of migrants making their way through Mexico.
Democrats have blamed Trump for the tenuous status of the DACA program that shielded hundreds of thousands of immigrants, often called “Dreamers”, from deportation and gave them work permits.
The President has been lashing out at Mexico for allowing a group of Central American demonstrators, mostly from Honduras, to march toward the U.S. border, where many hope to seek asylum.
Trump’s latest tweet about the border came less than 24 hours after he said he intends to send US military forces there, something that would be legally tricky.
A senior White House official also said the Trump administration is crafting legislation to make it harder for refugees to gain asylum in the US and loosen restrictions on undocumented immigrants apprehended near the border. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, now Trump’s energy secretary, sent 1,000 Texas National Guardsmen to the Rio Grande Valley in 2014 in response to a sharp increase in Central American children crossing the border alone. “You catch and then you immediately release, and people come back years later for a court case, except they virtually never come back”, he said, justifying his move to use military to protect the worldwide border.
Under Republican President George W. Bush, the National Guard between 2006 and 2008 provided border-related intelligence analysis, but had no direct law enforcement role. The National Guard is exempt from the law, but has its own regulations restricting its members from such activity.
The number declined during the second year to about 3,000. According to the National Guard, its soldiers and airmen served as a force multiplier for the border patrol agents on the ground, spotting border intrusions and offering technical support.
