White House: No DACA Deal Unless Congress Closes Immigration Loopholes
“Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch and Release”.
Senate Republican leaders have ignored previous calls from Trump advocating the so-called nuclear option, which would involve changing Senate rules so Republicans could more easily overcome Democratic opposition to legislation in a chamber they control with a thin majority of 51 out of 100 seats. Trump last month threatened to veto a spending bill because it did not address the fate of Dreamers and did not fully fund his border wall but he ultimately signed the bill.
So much for the spirit of Holy Week. In short, it was unpresidential.
Online, many criticised the president for remarks, but said they were not surprised, given his history of tweets on DACA.
If there’s anything productive to be found in the latest Trump Twitter-storm, it’s a reminder that the best long-term solution for “Dreamers” is for the US Congress to extend protections, and a path to citizenship, for the DACA eligible and, if possible, other productive members of US society who merit such an opportunity.
He has blamed Democrats for standing in the way of a deal, but the White House has repeatedly rejected proposals on the programme.
Asked later if he wasn’t the one who killed the programme, Trump stuck to blaming Democrats: “The Democrats have really let them down”. Newly arriving illegal immigrants can not win protections under DACA, created in 2012 by Trump’s Democratic predecessor Barack Obama, for two reasons.
Trump’s announcement came on a day administration officials said they’re crafting a new legislative package aimed at closing immigration “loopholes”. In addition, Trump himself ordered an end to the programme, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is not accepting new applicants.
The president’s position on the program is a moving target. First is the notion that Democrats are the impediment to DACA.
“You would have to have entered before 2007 and be under the age of 16 at the time”. It’s a shame. And now people are taking advantage of DACA and that’s a shame.
U.S. President Donald Trump says he’ll call off DACA and NAFTA in reaction to the more than 1,000 Central Americans caravaning through Mexico hoping for U.S. asylum. For one, the US Army Corps of Engineers already handles border infrastructure and construction. The President’s reckless comments may endanger this type of cooperation. The “nuclear option” refers to using a parliamentary procedure that would allow the Senate to effectively decide an issue by a simple majority. Good luck with that.
White House Chief of Staff John Kelly did not travel with him, but senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, a proponent of hard-line immigration policies, has been spending the Easter weekend with Trump. Trump took a hard line on illegal immigration during the campaign and has also sought to curtail legal immigration. And they will win with the support of every decent American.
The Fox headline was “Caravan of illegal immigrants headed to U.S”.
Trump reiterated his long-standing call for better relations with Moscow, despite a series of conflagrations and crises, including Russian meddling in the USA election and the poisoning of a Russian double agent on British soil.
