Instagram rolls out Focus mode for portrait photos and videos

The outlet reports the media-focused social app will soon roll out a “data portability tool” that will allow users to download the data they’ve shared in the past. The company is supposed to launch a new tool that will let users make a copy of all the content they have uploaded on Instagram, as per a company spokesman.

Amid the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scandal, Instagram is now taking steps to allow users to have some control on their data.

This new tool when implemented will allow the users to take a copy of the data and shift to another photo sharing platform seamlessly. As Facebook is falling in line with GDPR norms, it is expected that this tool will bring photo-sharing Instagram under the same ambit. Facebook launched its Download Your Data tool just six years after launch. It is not known whether Instagram will allow downloading of data like likes, comments and captions which are shared with the posts.

It is unclear whether the company will also include details of a user’s advertising profiling in its data download. There is also the question of quality of the photos and videos.

When you open your camera in the Instagram Stories mode, you’ll now see a new option called Focus, right beside Boomerang and Superzoom. “Focus mode leverages background segmentation and face detection technology”, an Instagram spokesperson told TechCrunch.

The full scope of Instagram’s data portability tool isn’t clear. This would greatly reduce the risks associated with trusting third-party app developers with an individual’s Instagram credentials.

Instagram recently announced a new Focus Mode that replicates a bokeh or background blur effect found on most modern Android smartphones.
