Tom Coughlin optimistic after Giants have communication with Jason Pierre-Paul
The Giants have made contact with troubled defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.
Pierre-Paul recently spoke with team general manager Jerry Reese about his fireworks accident that resulted in a severe hand injury, but at this stage there’s nothing new to report.
The loss of Pierre-Paul, who last year led the team in sacks with 12.5, leaves a significant void for the Giants to fill in defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s new system, one that relies heavily on the pass rush.
Reese also said he has talked to Pierre-Paul’s agent, but declined to discuss Pierre-Paul’s contract and whether he will be placed on the non-football injury list. The team has not rescinded the $14.8 million franchise tag extended in March, although the expectation is that the price will have to be negotiated once Pierre-Paul reports to the Giants and they can check him medically. “It’s a traumatic situation”.
“Plenty of people have opinions about it, but my heart goes out to him”.
“For a young man to have a traumatic event like that in his life is life-changing for him”. He described his phone call as a good conversation, but said it was personal and would not disclose any details or if there is a timetable for the Giants’ injured defensive end to report to camp.
While Jason Pierre-Paul continues to be on the mend – and as far away from their facilities as possible – there’s still plenty of question marks abound regarding Big Blue’s reworked defense.
The team sent representatives to Florida after the accident but they were unable to visit in the hospital with Pierre-Paul. I think we have five defensive ends that we feel like can play and play at a high level at that position.
Reese said he liked the Giants’ roster heading into training camp, noting that there is plenty of competition at most positions. “We want to get well.’ That’s all we’re trying to do”. “I want to leave it at that”. Reese said “nothing is set” about a return for Pierre-Paul, who is still without a contract.
