Selfies, six packs causes of Arsenal downfall, says ex-United captain Keane
The former Manchester United skipper endured a long-running battle with Arsenal and in particular their captain Patrick Vieira during his playing career.
“They have got good players, really good players, it’s just that one or two of them are more interested in selfies and six-packs”.
“We’ve the same thing every year”, said Keane, when asked about Arsenal’s chances of winning their first league title for 12 years.
“It’s all about how their bodies look, how their hair is, more so than winning football matches – which is the way things are going.
They are a bit like they were in late 1980s, buying a lot of players thinking they will gel into a team”, he explained.
Keane gave one of those wicked half-smiles and dismissed the question nearly before it had time to reach his brain.
“But it doesn’t happen that quickly, although they will definitely be stronger this year”.
Keane believes that United’s rivals Manchester City have been poor in the transfer market over the last couple of years, and does not seem impressed by new signings Fabian Delph and Raheem Sterling.
Whatever Keane may think, Arsenal is the top contender to take the Premier League trophy away from Chelsea.
“United will be better and they will need to be stronger out of the blocks, but if I was a betting man I’d still go with Chelsea”, Keane said. Only if they fail to show that will they not win the title again. “Their team is the one with the strongest spine-John Terry, their goalkeeper (Thibaut Courtois), Eden Hazard-and if they can add (Everton’s England defender) John Stones to their team then they will be even harder to beat”. Keane has however, reignited his feud with the North London club after complaining about the Arsenal FC players” interest in “selfies’. “They appear to be a driven bunch and, if they can keep Diego Costa fit [and] keep their wits about them, then it’s hard to look elsewhere”.
