The baby boy was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in London at 11 a.m. local time, Kensington Palace said in a statement.

“Oyez, oyez, oyez, we’ve got a royal baby, a prince!” he bellowed, and a small knot of royalists posted across the road, drinking sparkling wine out of plastic cups, responded in kind: “Hip hip hooray!”

Charles said the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s baby son, their third child, was a “great joy”.

The official announcement of the birth was made by placing a notice on an easel in the forecourt of the queen’s London home, Buckingham Palace, a tradition that has been in place since it became the sovereign’s official residence in 1837.
