ABBA poised to release their first new music in 35 years
There is a catch.
ABBA was formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. There was a report in 2000 that they turned down $1 billion to perform a single concert. We’ll find out. I’m even holding out hope that this could signal a possible rectifying of one of pop history’s greatest injustices: that ABBA never recorded a James Bond theme song. “In my honest opinion, we looked like nuts in those years”. It would be such hassle.
Their upcoming TV special is set to kick off a tour that will see CGI versions of the four members performing around the world.
According to the group’s manager Gorel Hanser, nothing had changed, “It was the same wonderful chemistry”.
The band members have performed together just once since the 1980s, at a private party in 2016, and have long said they will never tour live together again.
“It’s a studio moment, I can promise you”, she said. Let’s hope that the new Abba music matches the initial optimism.
“I heard about Abba releasing new songs and I was instantly, like everyone else in the Abba community, really excited to know what the songs were and how they’re going to sound”.
Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn, Anni-Frid’. Their greatest hits album, ABBA Gold, is one of the UK’s biggest-sellers of all time.
The announcement comes roughly a month before Mamma Mia! Along with the Australian film Muriel’s Wedding it introduced their music to a new generation. In reality though, ABBA is responsible for huge hits like “Mamma Mia”, “Dancing Queen”, and tons of other catchy songs. But even appearing as holographic images should at least prompt reminisces of times gone by in the 1970s and early 1980s when they ruled the music scene. If you’re sitting up in the arena.
