Eagles draft tracker: CB Maddox, DE Sweat join flock in fourth round
Former Philadelphia Eagles kicker David Akers went on an epic rant during the second round of the NFL Draft. I met with them at the combine. Luckily, Howie Roseman and company have played their cards right, so far. If the Ravens finish in the middle of the league pack in 2019, the value of their second pick increases to where the Eagles will have amassed 898.6 points from this draft, despite trading a fifth-round choice to move up three spots to get ahead of Dallas – uh, to get Dallas.
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is full of wonder for the wizardry Michael Dickson can perform with his boot on an National Football League ball but there is another characteristic he noticed about the former Sydney Swans prospect. The Philadelphia Eagles entered the 2018 NFL Draft not having a single selection in the second or third round.
This isn’t the first time the Eagles have dipped into the game of rubgy for a player.
The Eagles traded No. 52 (2nd) and No. 169 (5th) to the Colts for No. 49 (2nd).
Goedert was the Eagles’ only Day Two draft pick.
Spending one of the Eagles’ few late-round picks here isn’t ideal, but it’s worth it to get a guy who many expected to be the top tight end in the draft.
Goedert might be the longest tight end the Eagles have had. Philly was the one that grabbed him. Wentz, who attended SDSU rival North Dakota State, shares the same sports agency with Goedert.
For those hoping to transition to other positions – Hayne (Running Back) and Gotsis (Defensive End) – the challenges are much greater and to date only Gotsis (32 games), is the only non-special team player to make the transition successfully.
Goedert was named “Dallas” because of his father’s affinity for the Cowboys, he said Friday night, adding that he nevertheless rooted for the Green Bay Packers growing up thanks to his stepdad’s influence. The possibilities are endless, and the mismatches are too. Claiming tight end a need when Zach Ertz is on the roster may seem extravagant, but Eagles fans have been spoiled with three quality tight ends for years now, and two of those are gone.
Maddox’ small frame (5-foot-9, 184 pounds) may remind fans of Brandon Boykin, and the Eagles may have a similar role for Maddox in mind.
While there was a little football discussed, most of the conversation at the NFL event was about more pressing topics such as off-field leadership. Souths had let him go.
An Australian rugby league player will join the Super Bowl champions for his debut NFL season. Truthfully, it’s the best you can do with what the Eagles had to work with.
The story of the 2018 NFL Draft is not the first round starting and ending with Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks.
