Jason Day leads Wells Fargo by two heading into final round
Early in the morning, the weather conditions were flawless for shooting a low score and 2 guys in particular took advantage. “And it was good to be able to come to a golf course like this where I know it’s very hard”. And he wasn’t alone.
Malnati was coming off two straight birdies to take the lead Friday in the Wells Fargo Championship when he put his 5-iron in a deep bunker. The second bogey was especially painful, following his birdie on the par-5 15th with a missed 2-footer on the par-3 16th. Woods stands minus-1 for the tournament, 212 overall. That forced Woods to make changes to his stroke Saturday.
Mickelson opened with two bogeys, failing to capitalize on the momentum from his third-round 64.
Birthday boy Rory McIlroy also slipped nine strokes off the pace after he shot 76, his worst score in relation to par in 32 rounds at Quail Hollow, where he has won twice.
This was Woods’ first event since his 32nd-place finish at the Masters in April.
Jason Day entered Quail Hollow Club’s infamous “Green Mile” tied for the lead Sunday, but conquered the stretch to earn his second PGA Tour win of the 2017-18 season.
Wise, 21, was only one behind Day with three holes to play but dropped shots at the 16th and 18th, where he chipped in from off the green for a bogey.
He freaking missed it. Three-putt at the last for a closing bogey.
“I’ve had ample time to make the adjustment and I haven’t”.
“I made it a little more handsy, kind of like how we used to putt when greens were so slow on public courses”, Woods said. It’s all just a bit of a struggle. I was disappointed because I just didn’t give a good account of myself on that final day. “The back side was definitely a lot more gettable today, obviously showcased with a number of guys going low on the back side”.
Perhaps trying to get some confidence during Sunday’s round would be a benefit heading to the Players Championship.
The greens at Quail Hollow have perplexed Woods all week.
Crowd favourite Mickelson posted five birdies and an eagle but the round of the day came from Uihlein, who recorded five consecutive birdies followed by an eagle.
His 64 matches his lowest score since opening the 2016 Open with a 63 at Royal Troon (he shot 64 a year ago in the final round at the Greenbrier) and he did it without a bogey. “When the pressure was on, I kept my head about me and pulled off some incredible shots”. “I think once that starts to happen, then things are going to switch pretty quickly”, Day said. McIlroy (-3) and Fowler (-4) are likely out of the mix, too, but McIlroy did shoot a 62 back in 2010 in the final round for his first PGA Tour victory.
Sung Hyun Park and Jenny Shin finished the rain-delayed first round of the abbreviated LPGA Texas Classic on Saturday with six-under 65s to share a one-stroke lead.
