Law Enforcement Officers Remembered for ‘National Peace Officers Memorial Day’

Speaking at the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service Tuesday in Washington, D.C., President Trump honored the American law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and pledged to do everything in his power to protect those now serving.

There are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers now in the U.S. Since the first recorded death in 1791, over 20,000 law enforcement officers-representing cities, counties, states, and federal agencies in the United States-have died in the line of duty.

“We weren’t going to bring you up, but I looked at you in the audience and I said you have to come up because you’re representing something so important”, he added, saying the family had the “best genes I’ve ever seen”.

The festivities will continue on Tuesday with a memorial at Jarvis Plaza followed by a blue mass to pay tribute to all of the fallen officers. Attorney General Jeff Sessions commenced the reading of the fallen officers’ names, which was then followed by the candle-lighting. The honor guard is seen in the background after having paid respects to three fallen officers.

Trump emphasized law and order and his strong support for cops, border patrol agents, and other law enforcement officers when he campaigned for the White House.

Rain forced police to delay the annual ceremony and move it from Forman Park into the lobby of the department’s headquarters. “On behalf of all Mississippians, we are grateful for the service and sacrifice of all police and law enforcement officers”.
