Saving at the pump during your Memorial Day travels
AAA Mid-Atlantic says that almost 90 percent of travelers will pay the highest gas prices since 2014 when they hit the road this weekend. That’s because the last time gas prices surged to $3.70 a gallon in 2014, travelers didn’t adjust their plans, said Alana Hughson, executive director of the Central Oregon Visitors Association.
Near record numbers are expected to travel by cars, buses, trains and planes this Memorial Day weekend – the unofficial start to summer – including a large number of New Mexicans.
During Memorial Day Weekend 2018 during the Month of May, the American People commemorate and honor the lives of the soldiers who sacrificed themselves on behalf of the Nation’s freedom. But there have been more than 106 crashes and thirty-one people were injured in the collisions.
California as of Friday is the most expensive place in the country to fill up, with an average price of $3.727 a gallon, just ahead of Hawaii’s $3.712, AAA data shows.
Regular Gas prices in OH have gone up.25 cents on average over the past month to $2.91.
MHP has issued 2,600 citations and 54 for driving under the influence.
“We try to pack lunches and make up for it I guess”, said Colleen Kremsreiter.
With so much rain the past week and a half and the opportunity for more rainfall earlier in the weekend, any heavy precipitation could bring about a flood risk. And 25 percent fewer people plan to take trips longer than one week this summer compared to past year, while weekend trips are up 17 percent.
“It’s been raining and cold all winter, so this is great, we’re taking advantage of the day”, says Randy Quinn. The “Click it or Ticket” initiative is an outstanding way or reminding our citizens to protect those they love by insisting they wear seat belts.
Meanwhile, The Mississippi Highway Patrol is pushing their safety initiative “Drive to Survive”.
Other advice to pass along from AAA – drive easy.
“Also, eating and reaching for things in the vehicle, floorboard or back seat can lead to disaster”.
