Roseanne Barr blames Ambien: ‘I’m not a racist, just an idiot’
It took just 12 hours between the time Barr posted a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former aide to President Obama, and ABC announced the cancellation of the top-rated comedy.
Barr still claims she was just joking when she compared Jarrett to “Planet of the Apes” and the Muslim Brotherhood in a tweet on Tuesday morning.
But within minutes of the apology, Barr quickly began retweeting defenses of her comments and later this morning criticized “Roseanne” co-stars Sara Gilbert and Michael Fishman, who both released statements Tuesday critical of the show’s star. “And with that said, I have an idea that I think makes this work for everyone”, he explained.
Barr’s comment, which has now been deleted, was sent in response to a tweet that accused Jarrett of helping “hide” misdeeds for the Obama administration.
“We don’t have much on this network”, he confided to his viewers in what sounded something like his much-loved appearance at ABC’s Upfront presentation. In one tweet she calls her own words indefensible and blames Ambien for the initial tweet.
On Kimmel’s Tuesday night ABC show, the talk show host addressed the news of the canceled series.
‘I know. The President did it too.
Plus, networks including Paramount Network, TV Land, and CMT along with streaming platform Hulu and the digital service Laff have dropped reruns of the original “Roseanne” from their lineup, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Emma Kenney, who plays Darlene’s eldest child, Harris Conner-Healy, shared her disapproval.
The executive producer of “Roseanne”, which came back this spring after being gone for two decades and instantly became television’s second most popular comedy, said he supported ABC’s decision.
Her daughter Laura is a justice reporter for news network CNN. It was praised for its realistic portrayal of working-class life.
Then Gilbert tried to distance the show from Barr.
Before its cancellation, the revamped Roseanne had been one of the most popular shows on U.S. television and was once feted by President Trump.
