Padres fall short of a sweep in Miami, fall to Marlins 5
Unfortunately, to deflate the clutch Amarista jack, Brandon Maurer gave up a walk-off three-run home run to Adeiny Hechavarria.
“I was just trying to help out the team”, Hechavarria said. “I’m blessed to be feeling healthy right now that’s all I could say”.
His shot to left-center capped an unexpected display of ninth-inning power from light-hitting shortstops.
However, Fernandez is the only one of those three to have earned his wins exclusively as a starting pitcher. It was redemption for Kimbrel, who blew just his second save chance of the season on Friday.
Kennedy gave up a first inning, two-run home run to Marlins left-fielder Christian Yelich.
– Jose Fernandez pitched well over six shutout innings.
Maurer (7-4) faced four batters, and three scored.
According to Elias, Johnny Allen (1932-33) and LaMarr Hoyt (1980-82) are the only other pitchers since 1900 to start a career with 16 winning decisions at home.
The last pitch Fernandez threw that traumatic night in San Diego was hit for a grand slam by Jedd Gyorko. Former Padre Mat Latos was just dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres teed off against him five days later, after which it was determined that Fernandez needed elbow reconstruction surgery that kept him out of Miami’s rotation for more than a year.
The Padres previously announced that Kennedy would leave the team to be with his wife, who is in labor, but he could not get out of Miami.
That’s not good for them.
With four wins in a row and seven in the past eight games, the San Diego Padres are having fun. Take that away, and San Diego has no runs in 20 2-3 innings against him. “I really wanted it. It was probably a little more personal”, Fernandez said. Since returning from the disabled list in early July, Fernandez is 5-0 with a 2.13 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 47/9 K/BB ratio across 38 innings. Ichiro Suzuki and Miguel Rojas scored after opening with consecutive doubles. But he was stranded when Fernandez struck out Shields, center fielder Will Venable flew out to shallow right and third baseman Yangervis Solarte struck out.Fernandez also worked around a two-out, two-base error by first baseman Justin Bour in the sixth, striking out Norris on his final pitch of the day. Spangenberg hasn’t played since June 27.
“I think that victory was for someone else, too”, Padres interim manager Pat Murphy said.
NOTES: Marlins 2B Dee Gordon, who entered Sunday third in the NL batting race (.330 average), was given a rest….
Kennedy (6-9) didn’t get a decision in the outing, but San Diego beat Miami, 8-3, with a five-run 11th-inning burst. In his first 45 appearances, Ramos allowed seven runs.
“Dietrich stepped up big, two outs, to hit a blast like that, you felt the momentum was swinging our way”, Marlins manager Dan Jennings said.
Padres: RHP Odrisamer Despaigne (4-7) is to pitch Saturday against the Marlins after beating them 3-2 Sunday in San Diego.
David Phelps allowed three runs in five innings.
